Black Rat Snake (Pantheerophis Obsoletus) Skins

Unlike mammals, snakes shed their skin periodically in a process called ecdysis. This usually happens several times a year as they grow up. The old skin is shed in one piece, often inside out, resembling a hollow tube of the snake’s body. This particular species is among the largest snake in North America, reaching lengths of up to 8 feet. These snakes are non-venomous constrictors and are excellent climbers and are often found in trees. This artifact is a gift from Chuck and Betsy Bean.
