Empire State Building Stainless Steel Window Mullion

New York, NY: Empire State Building Window Mullion: Built in 1931 and holding the title of the world’s largest building until 1970, the building was the scene of a horrific tragedy on July 28, 1945, when a disoriented B-25 pilot flew into it enroute to Newark, NJ. The plane struck the north side of the building between the 79th and 80th floor, resulting in the deaths of the 3 crew members and 11 people within the building. Despite the damage, the building was able to reopen within 48 hours. This specimen was part of a stainless-steel window mullion dislodged in the collision and acquired at auction in 2021.
